Learning 'Magkaugnay'

Agnes Locsin's 'Romeo & Juliet'
Instagam
We started learning this new dance a few weeks ago. It's a modern number to music by Joey Ayala. I don't know if we're going to perform it or anything, but when Teacher Agnes told us about tackling the piece, she mentioned our having to synchronize. Maybe it's a sort of exercise for us? It was performed a long time ago in Locsin's and we are learning the steps via video.

The choreography leans to the ethnic and folk, as most of Teacher Agnes works do. The steps are challenging especially in the part where we all hold hands. We run the risk of trampling on one another lest someone tripped which, thankfully, hasn't happened yet. I haven't quite absorbed that part yet. There are so many travelling side ways with many changes in the direction we face. It's more of a challenge for the mind, I think, and less of the body. It's not an "Olympic stamina" dance as many of Teacher Agnes 'babies' would say.

I feel like I am immersing myself in Teacher Agnes work. I'm reading her book right now and it proves to be very enlightening. I wish I could watch all her works! She really takes the message of her dances deeply and seriously. It's much more than the movement...

For today's class, we had  'guest artist'. Kuya John is here for Ballet Philippines' tour. I'm not sure what they will be performing, but they'll be in SM Lanang Premier this afternoon :) I assisted Kuya John's Ballet 1b class last summer.

There's a lot going on in Davao's dance scene since Encantada. A visit from a Swiss contemporary company (details out soon), BP's tour, a production of Romeo and Juliet....

Roughly translated I think the word 'Magkaugnay' means 'unity'. Google translate says 'correlate' but I like 'unity' better ^_^ Anyway, here's an audio of the music:

Encantada Up Close

BP performed Encantada one last time in Davao yesterday. I was able to catch them in rehearsal before the show started and made my first GIF out of the three lucky pics I took {you can see the GIF here}. I sat so near the stage but I did not take any photos during the performance because my phone's battery died... :( Also a bit discouraged by the quality of my last shots.

The show started with an excerpt of a work which I was not able to catch the title of, sadly. I liked the music to this piece especially the pas de deux of Richardson Yadao and Carissa Adea. I was glad to see that people were watching from the second floor of the building, tells us that there is an audience for ballet here.

Encantada was the final act. They danced the two numbers that I particularly enjoyed from Thursday's gala; the scene where they heal the Estranjero's wounds and the final hair flipping/shouting act ^_^ I can't stop singing/humming the songs! Is there an Encantada soundtrack???!!!

I was kind of hoping that the company would still be here and that I'd see them in Locsin's this morning ^_^ But I think they left last night. I'm inspired ♡

Encantada in Davao 2012

Encantada was just- Wow.

Davao streets are pretty heavy with traffic nowadays. This is all because of the preparations and vacations for the Kadayawan festival. This season is unique to our city, and Davao alone. It's just fitting that Teacher Agnes brings Encantada here and now.

I thought I was going to be late for this much awaited event, that I would  have to quietly creep in the theater while the show began, missing most of the exciting beginning. I went down ahead of the family and found my seat in the VIP 2 row {what a blessing!}. We were not late, yes... I learned something from the person sitting behind me; politicians get offended when you start without them. Well, I'd have to thank that politician for saving my nerves. The show started 15 minutes after I arrived...

The simple stage and props.

An opening speech was delivered by Margie Moran, President of Ballet Philippines.

To have a band play Joey Ayala's music live was thrilling! Such interesting sounds combined with songstress Bayang Barrios' skilled vocals. Those bamboo instruments that seem to have been taken for granted as home decorations, they used them. The composer joked later on [after Mom told him he was a rock star] that he was a "wood-star". Al Santos composed the libereto which is in tagalog. People ought to propagate this kind of music more! Beautiful, beautiful...

Encantada is a work of emotions. It is the message of one who is inspired by her own message. Of  Teacher Agnes' works that I have seen, I don't think it is her best work choreographically {Even my non-dancer parents noticed the non-dance of the work}. But I think it is her most moving in terms of conveying her message.Encantada told a story.

Set in the Spanish Colonial Era of the Philippines, it shows how the colonizers maltreated the locals and nature in turn. Act I starts with the Encantada, played by Carissa Adea, with the kababaihan [her female followers] in a sort of ritual or trance. I like how the dancers contributed to the music with clapping and shouting in dances of celebration.. I also liked the hair flipping.

The Fraile and Guardia Civil, our story's villain and minions, were a memorable part of the performance. Their scary, mask-like makeup and head movements reminded me of 'Small House of Uncle Thomas' from Roger and Hammerstein's 'The King and I'. One of the Guardia Civil descended the stage and climbed onto empty seats. He got close enough to where I was but I wasn't able to take a photo. One kid screamed when he went up on the chair beside her ^_^

At the end of the performance a standing ovation, curtain calls, and bouquets of flowers were offered to the Encantada, Estranjhero: danced by Jean Marc Cordero, the Babaylan: Katherine Trofeo, and of course to the chorégraphe extraordinaire, Agnes Locsin. The audience went wild for the Frile played by Richardson Yadao.

For those who apreciated and understood last night's performance it either brought tears to their eyes, or banana side-ways smiles on their lips. I myself could not help shouting "Teacher Agnes!!!!" when she joined the cast on-stage for the final bow.

After the show was the usual fan-girling. Friends from RAD were there and we took photos on stage, with the cast and with the musicians.

Puno: Pangatlong Galaw

A view of the theater from my sitting place.
My whole family watched Puno with me last night. We arrived early and was able to chat and dilly-dally at the front desk where I saw an excerpt of Teacher Agnes new book 'Philippine Neo-ethnic Choreography'. We entered through the back door and sat at the rightmost corner of the studio-turned-theater, right next to where the dancers exited and entered.

The show started at exactly 7:00 and and ended a little earlier than 8:30. Narrations were in Tagalog by Ate Delphine and there were photographers who documented the work.

I especially liked the dances with props. My favorite being the one that seemed to symbolize a Bonsai. Ate Georgette danced this with a thick wire that she wrapped around her body. It made me realize how truly similar a dancer and a plant is. The piece is entitled 'Bawal Kang Tumubo', in English; 'You are not allowed to grow'.

The whole thing was entertaining, not as serious as Dahon. There was this super funny fight scene which, I'm guessing, was probably Ate Delphine's handiwork ^_^ It ended up with Ate Gaye hiding behind Michael Dakudao and Ate Georgette sitting on his lap and kissing him! I wonder if he was there in the last two shows, or if they victimized someone else...

My friend and I took a picture with Teacher Agnes in front of the Encantada poster afterwards. It's blurry but I think the memory's worth posting...

... falling into place

My sister's Chucks.

I missed voice class yesterday. Ashley had Violin lessons at home and we didn't pay much attention to the time while chatting with her teacher... At least I wasn't late for Tap. There were some new steps, which makes me a little unsure about stopping for a month...

Ate Delphine came into Tap a little while through the beginning. I was both surprised and happy to see her.

  {Serendipity again!}

I told her about my going to Manila for the Hip Hop Shakespeare Workshop and we started talking about theater :)

Every thing seems to be falling into place!

I really love theater. Maybe I should concentrate on that instead...

A lot of dancers who are in Broadway are saying that voice lessons are useful. Guess I'm on the right track...

I'm really happy I went to the workshop... New doors open :)

Saw another poster of Encantada outside the Philippine Women's College.

Literature Portfolio

Not so little me attempting a good photo with books :)
I heard from my friends from school that they are making this thing called a "Literature Portfolio". If school was the world, "Literature Portfolio" would trend on Twitter... definitely.

So, I decided to ask what that was and they said that our {wait, the} principal required them to make a list of books they have read...

I remember Mom, long ago... telling me to do just that.

Pleased and Motivated, I busied myself with listing down my 'Literate Accomplishments'. So there. The life of a homeschooler.

Saw a lot of school friends today :)

. . . . .

Spotted a poster of Encantada in a restaurant. I was like "Success!!!! Oh Yeah!!!" Ashley says she sees a lot of them in different places... I wish she'd tell me! I'll do a poster count ^_^ Apparently it's Carissa Adea{not Candice} who will be dancing for us this August. I'm not sure I ever watched her but am glad for the introduction ^_^

The stage in Locsin's has some interesting props for Dahon. And the latest newspaper article by Michael Dakudao; Agnes Locsin’s PUNO: Pangatlong Galaw.

Asked Ate Gigi about the Encantada Tickets. They are not selling any until Dahon shows.

There was a short pointe class. last Saturday. Didn't get to join. I didn't bring my shoes :(

Class with Ate Georgette this week.

Busy rep. No ads -_-

  When we got home for lunch today, dad gave me quite a surprise. A VIP ticket for Teacher Agnes' Encantada. Strangely, though the ticket is from TicketWorld, Encantada does not appear on the TicketWorld website :( Anyway I will freely advertise myself;
Agnes Locsin's Encantada is coming to Davao on 9August 2012, 7:00 p.m. Rosa Santos Munda Events Center, Philippine Women's Collage of Davao, Matina, Davao City.
I am rather disappointed by the lack of advertising... Puno is more well advertised. I am not saying that one is better than the other. I'm just puzzled by why Encantada isn't spoken of... Will ask.

Yesterday, Ate Gaye taught Ballet again. She said that Ate Georgette would take over next week. I have been enjoying Ate Gaye's classes so far. I guess we 'emote' more :P Shhhh!!!... And my back hasn't been hurting!!!

Had my first voice lesson at Scherzo Music School this afternoon. We studied 'Think of Me' from Phantom... So excited for this August...

Tap this evening. Arrived early, again... Busied myself reading Bernard Shaw in the dressing room. Class is speeding up... a little. Working on those s l o w steps. 'Articulation' B) Teacher Agnes and Ate Gaye watched us...

Mom wants me to stop Tap for a month... :(

Way to go!!!

Photo from BP Website

Exactly one week ago, Ballet Philippines' Principal Dancer Candice Adea won 1st prize in the Helsinki International Ballet Competition. She danced with her non-competing partner; Jean Marc Cordero whom she has dance with in many other competitions before. I just wanna share the Pinoy Pride and congratulate her. I'm looking forward to watching Ms. Adea on BP's touring season. Hopefully in Teacher Agnes' Encantada.

Just A Thought...

Georgette Sanchez in Encatada

Georgette Sanchez did not take class with us this morning. But she watched our Gershwin piece which we will be dancing again for the next recital alongside "A Midsummer Night's". Teacher Agnes explained that our recital will be just be based on "A Midsummer Night's". We will wear more modern costumes. No tutus.
I have to work on Gershwin. Will keep watching the videos and take note of my mistakes... This morning before class started, I was walking up the stairs in my pointe shoes and I stubbed my toe on the step >_< No dead nails though...
Ate Gorgette/ Ms. Sanchez (that awkward moment when you don't know what to call an older person O.o) will be teaching on Monday, Chinese New Year (red leotard opportunity XP). But I think it's Ballet 4 not 3 :| I found this article about her very interesting: Mindanao Times; Lifestyle, Dancing leaves
I suddenly, for some reason I don't know, thought of myself as Georgette Sanchez for a while. You know, kind of like put myself in her shoes, and I thought that if I'm like an adult already, and I'd read my past blog entries, I'd probably cry :')... Just a though...

A Visit from Ballet Philippines

Ballet Philippines Artistic Director Paul Alexander Morales
Watched Ballet Philippines perform "Faces of Eve" in SM Mall Davao on Sunday. They were so good!! What I noticed most of all was that their jumps were silent, as in soundless! They performed both classical and contemporary pieces. I took some videos but, unfortunately, they won't upload. The pictures are kinda blurry too T_T.

Most of what they performed were works by Filipino artists (Go Pinoy!) like; "To Whom It May Concern" by Novy Bereber, "Crisostomo Ibarra" <3 by: Paul Alexander Morales, and a lot more. They also performed Variations from "Harlequinade", and "The Sleeping Beauty".

I'd say my favorite part was a contemporary piece in which the dancers wore white. I forgot it's title but it was  a really exciting piece.

Locsin's students with BP dancers

I wish ballet companies would come to perform more often, I mean, we need stuff like this! There's barely any "happenings" around here and when there is the people of Davao flock in one place to be there.

Anyway, here's a link to the company members of BP:

I recognize some dancers including the one I was starstruck with <3 LOL :P Hehe

2 weeks

Ballet Manila's Crystal Gala

2 weeks of NO Dance Club... Sigh, usually, by now, I'd be counting the minutes before well be dismissed. Today is Kadayawan, a local holiday... Next Friday is our schools Filipino Festival, and its only half a day. If only we could present something for Filipino Fest but I know nothing about folk dancing! :O Except maybe the Filipino folk tales turned Ballet! :P
